Do dismiss avocados entirely::

Avocado boom wreaks havoc on Latin America’s environment. Increasing avocado demand consumption often means deforestation and drought in Latin America. The environmental consequences are worrisome. The high level of water consumption required to obtain the avocados silky texture and the acreage needed to meet demand have wreaked havoc on land.

The early versions of avocados originated in Mesoamerica where Aguacate (aoacatl). However, there are many endemic varieties that are native to Peru and South America in general where it is known as Palta. In the regions of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, as long as there is water available, avocados grow wild and healthy from sea level to approx. 2500 meters above sea level. Being close to the ecuador, the winters are mild, and this helps the Palta plants.
